Amnesic Shellfish Toxin (AST) Event in the Southwest Please be advised that we are now detecting levels above the Regulatory Limit of 20mg/kg for Amnesic Shellfish Toxins in shellfish from sites within Kenmare Bay. We are also detecting quantifiable levels of Amnesic Shellfish Toxins in shellfish from Castlemaine harbour. The high levels of Amnesic Shellfish Toxins observed in Bantry have reduced significantly. AST toxicity accumulates rapidly in shellfish and can reach very high concentrations. It is advised that shellfish should only be harvested from affected bays which are monitored for AST weekly. It is recommended that all shellfish species harvesting in Bantry and Kenmare Bay to be submitted on a weekly basis for testing and that water samples frequency be maintained at 100%. .
